Teenager's Needs and Wants
Do you know what a need and want is?
A need is a lack of something wanted or deemed necessary, it is something that a person doesn't necessarily want but requires to live their life. A want is an item that you feel a need or desire for, such as a computer, hair accessories or a piece of jewellery. There is a difference!
Did you know overtime Teenagers wants change!
In 1953 to 1996 teenagers wanted clothes, food and entertainment. The percentage of teenagers spending their money on clothes was 34%, entertainment at 22%, and lastly food at 16%. I know what you are thinking, this is the same as today, isn't it? Well, it actually isn't compared to a survey conducted in 2002. In 2002 teenagers mostly wanted clothes, and especially entertainment. Teenagers spent in total a big 49% of their money on entertainment that is nearly over half of the income of the worlds' teenagers. They spent their money on things such as ipods, iphones, televisions, ipads and computers.
The odd thing is that our needs in our whole life always stay the same...
Why is this? Well it is because we are all human, humans all need the same things, like; oxygen, sleep, food and nutrients, water and especially love. Did you know a baby can die if it doesn't get enough love!
(just a theory).
Income, Advertising and Peer Pressure affects buying habits
Income is one of the biggest things which affect a teenagers buying habits. If you only get low income then you are limited to the things which you are able to buy. Whereas, if you have a high income then a lot of the time you can get whatever you want. But, the problem is that usually when teenagers receive a lot of income they spend it all straight away. This is a result of how advertising and peer pressure affect a teenager's wants. Advertising is a way for businesses to promote their products and increase sales. Fashion and technology change throughout the year and it is natural for people, teenagers in this case, to 'want' what is being advertised and spoken about right know. Peers and family affect your wants because of what hey have which could interest you and might want to have it because everyone else owns this type of item or clothing. Lets say that you see your friend with the new iPhone 500 and see all of the appealing things she does with her phone.
